Regulations for the Sukiya of the Shogun

将軍の数寄屋における決まり事



Drawn up by the Shogun Ietsuna in the ninth month of the second year of manji (1659) in the era of the Emperor Go-Sain

後西天皇、万冶二（１６５９）年九月、将軍家綱によって書かれた規則集。

(1)When the Shogun himself attends a Cha-no-yu the greatest care must be taken.

将軍自らが茶の湯に出席する時はもっとも最上の待遇でなければならない。

(2)When Cha-no-yu is given in the gardens of the Castle they must be given a special Cleaning.

城内において茶の湯が催される時は特別な清掃が必要である。

(3) The head of the attendants of the Castle Tea-rooms and those under him (Go-katte Bozu) must be on duty there day and night to do what is required.

茶の湯に従事する茶坊主や参加する者達は、朝から晩まで、すなわち、終日それに掛かりきりになること。

(4) Concerning the cleaning of the Apartment called Kuro Shoin the greatest attention shall be paid to it, not only on days of Ceremony but at all other times, and when the attendants go off duty those who relieve them shall again see that nothing is overlooked.

Kuro　Shoinと言う建物はとりわけ注意を払わなければならない。茶会当日はのみならず普段から管理されていて、その担当者は常に気を配る。

(5) In the two sets of Tea-room in the Outer Castle the Tea pages (Bozu) shall be always on duty and ready to serve tea at any moment. But Cha-no-yu performed with the Daisu shall be prepared from the hour of the Dragon (10 a.m.) and served after the hour of the Ram (2 p.m.) Cha-no-yu shall always be given after the hours of duty. Neither shall this tea be on any account carried to any other room.

二カ所で行われる茶事の間中、茶坊主と呼ばれる給仕掛は常にお茶が給仕出来る体制を整えている。茶の湯は台子と呼ばれる方法で午前十時の竜の刻から午後二時の羊の刻まで出されるが、予備時間として一時間は延長される。ともに融通を気かすことはなくそれぞれが責任を持つ。

(6) The Chief Tea Master shall go round and inspect the Tearooms twice every day, but not a any fixed time, and the chiefs of the pages under him (Kumi-gashira) shall go the same three times during the day and night, also at odd times that there be no negligence.

亭主はその二つの茶席に対し、常に気を配らなければならない。彼の下の組頭もそれぞれの茶席に気をくばり怠けてはならない。

(7) The chief officials in charge of the Rojis shall also go round every day and superintend the cleaning of them, and shall see that all the duties pertaining to the buildings in them are properly performed.

亭主は庭である露地においてもしかり、建物との調和や掃除においても気をくばらなければならない。

(8) The greatest precautions must be taken against fire, not only in the Tea-rooms but also in the rooms in the Roji by all the Tea Officials. Fire pages shall make their rounds by night and day and shall exercise all vigilance.

もっとも注意しなければならないのは火の用心である。すべての者が火に細心の注意を払い、火の係りは朝から晩まで動き火の番をする。

(9) The Chief Tea Master shall see to it that at no time is there any unceremonious deportment on the part of the least of all those who are employed in any part of the apartments where Cha-no-yu is performed.

亭主は茶事が行われているそれぞれの場所やその係りに対し、仕事中外を問わず、その管理や指示をしなければならない。

(10) When the following members of the Sanke visit the Castle and Tea is served the officers down to the Metsuke shall be presented and then those in attendance. Kii Dono Mito Dono, Owari Dono, Sama-no-kami Dono, Kii Saisho Dono, Mito Chujo Dono, and Owari Uemon Dono.

紀伊、水戸、尾張の徳川御三家が登城したときは、茶はめつけの将校が接待を取り仕切る。

(11) On the Five Festivals, and the first, fifteenth and twenty-eighth days of the month when the Daimyos come to pay their visits of ceremony Cha-no-yu is to be performed with the Daisu in the Tea-rooms adjoining the Great Hall of Audience, but on no account is Tea to be taken to any other apartment.

五つの祭りと一日、十五日、二十八日は大名達が謁見の大広間の隣の茶室にて台子飾でお茶を相伴し、その他の場所ではけして茶事はしない。

(12) Whit regard to the visits of the Daimyos Tea is not to be served to them without orders from those in charge, and the Chief Tea Master and the chief of the pages shall go round and inspect the Daisu and utensils and shall see that the greatest care is exercised.

大名に対する茶の湯に関して、所望がなければけして出してはならない。そして、茶主やその給仕頭はいつでも茶の湯を接待出来るように細心注意をはらい待機していなければならない。

(13) Let all be very particular to see that no tea or any utensils or anything of any kind in use in the Sukiya department is lost.

茶の湯の為の数寄屋において、茶の準備がしていないところがけしてないように。

(14) No official of the Sukiya is to visit any of the Daimyos without some good reason. Should there be any question about the matter report should be made to the Chief and his order awaited.

大名達が何時不意にたずねてくるかもしれず、それに備え、つねに準備をしておくこと。

(15) Concerning the hours of duty those employed in the Roji as well as Tea pages (O-Sukiya-gashira) shall be on duty in their respective watches every day.

露地内の建物においても、茶事に関する職務についている者は常に責任を持って管理する。

(16) Should any member of one watch be ill, some one off duty shall immediately offer assistance.

病人によって職務が遂行出来なくなったら、代わりの者が速やかに受け持つ。

(17) There shall or no loud talking about the Tea-rooms. Particularly shall voices no be raised when on duty in the Great Hall of Audience and in the Reception rooms known as Kuro Shoin and Haku Shoin and care must be taken that those employed in the Roji and any others who have business there are warned not to speak loudly.

茶室内では大声で話してはいけない。特に、黒書院、白書院と呼ばれている謁見の間では声を出してはいけないし、また、露地やその他の場所で仕事をする者は無言にてことを進める。

(18) Should there be any chance anyone who plots to do anything reprehensible, not only should no countenance be lent him, but, without losing the least time, material information should be given to Izu-no-kami and to the Chief Tea Master. In such case lands, rice and money will be given to the informer to the extent of double that which he would gain by agreement.

ふらちな謀議をする機会を与えてはならない、加えて、態度に出してもならない。あやしいと感じた時は、茶主は伊豆守へ報告をする。論功報償として、領土や石高を倍もらうことが出来る。
