茶の湯の服装



No special dress is required, but in former days the material called Kachin, dark blue Harima coarse cloth, was not worn, and also care was taken by the host that the colour of his dress was not the same as the mounting of the Kakemono.

特別な服はなにもありません。が、きちんとした"かちん"と呼ばれる褐色の生地のものを着、"はりま"と呼ばれる粗野なのもは避けられます。そして、亭主は掛け軸の表装と同じ色も物は絶対に避けなければなりません。

he garments called Dofuku, Hattoku and Jittoku were much worn.

胴徳、八徳、十徳と呼ばれるものを身につけます。

The Haori was removed when entering the Tea-room. Full dress is not worn, for if it were people could not get through the narrow wriggling-in door with any comfort.

羽織は茶室に入る前に脱がなければなりません。コートを脱いで、"にじり口"から中へ入りやすい服装という感覚ですか、、。



Tabi were worn on the feet. They were originally made for the Tea-room, since befor Rikyu's day only leather footgear was used, and it was impossible to enter the Sukiya in these.

足袋という靴下を履きます。もともとは革でできた靴みたいなものでしたが、利休さんになって、数奇屋に入るときはそれはいけないことになりました。

The use of cotton Tabi or socks as now worn is attribute to the mother of Hosokawa Tadaoki, who made them for her son because he suffered from coldness of the feet when he took part in Cha-no yu.

綿製の足袋を身につけるようになったのは、細川忠興が茶の湯の時、彼のお母さんが息子の冷え性のために履かせたのが始まりです。

Dress must be quiet and not gaudy. Konoe Iehiro says that when a Cha-no-yu was give to cheer the Shogun Ietsuna, who was indisposed, Inada Mino-no-kami appeared in crested costume of bright colour and Kamishimo.

服装は落ち着きがあってけばけばしてはいけません。近衛家熙(このええいひろ)の記録によれは、将軍家綱の茶会において稲田美濃守と言う人物がけばけばしい裃を着こみ現れたことに対し不快だったことが書かれています。

When Katagiri Sekishu was asked what he thought of this he said it was permissible as an interesting departure from custom to amuse the Shogun, but when Iehiro reported this decision to Teikyo Ho-Shinno, he dissented from it, for he thought some other better variation could have been devised or this purpose than a rather childish breach of the basic principles of the Tea, for gaudy dress was a always in bad taste at such a time.

片桐石州がその服装の意図について尋ねたところ、将軍を喜ばすためにわざと伝統を逸脱して、それは許容範囲だと彼は返答しました。家熙はそのことをTeikyo Ho−Shinnoに報告し、異議を唱えたのです。茶の湯の何たるかを理解した上での工夫については良いが、子供じみた間違いは論外である。その後、けばけばした服装は宮中においてもご法度となったそうです。

When a meeting is to be given invitations are issued by the host not less than three days before.

茶の湯の招待状はすくなくても三日前までには出されなければなりません。

If Koicha is to be offered the formula of invitation is " So-cha Ippuku kenjitashi" - " I wish to offer you a cup of coarse tea," whereas if Usucha, the shorter expression " So-cha kenjitashi" - " I wish to offer you some coarse tea," is sufficient.

濃茶の場合は「粗茶一服献じたし」、対して薄茶は「粗茶献じたし」、一服という言葉を省くことで相手には薄茶と分かります。

The day before the meeting the host should see to the cleaning of the Inner and Ouyer Roji and especially to that of the Setsuin.

亭主は当日、内露地、外露地、とくに雪隠は入念に掃除をしなければなりません。

The tea-whisk, swab and the ladle should all be new, while the cookery-chopsticks and the spittoon of the tabaccotray should be made of green bamboo.

箒や雑巾は新しいもので、料理箸や煙草盆の灰落しは青竹で仕組んでおきます。

The led-rest ought properly should to be made of it also but it s often of other materials.

蓋置はもちろん新しい青竹を用意すべきですが、違う素材のものや"云われ"を使う場合もあります。

The tatami should be new also and the shoji freshly papered.

畳は新しく、障子の紙も新しくしなければなりません。

On the day of the meeting the host gets up rather earlier than usual and again cleans everything that was done the day before, sweeps out the Mizuya and then carefully inspects everything that is to be used, orders the menu for the meal, puts fresh water in the water-basin, moistens the ashes, cuts the charcoal, puts the incense into the incense-burner and arranged the flowers.

当日はいつもより早く起きてもう一度すべてを確認、清掃します。水屋を整えミスのないように、食事仕度の確認、手水鉢の水も新しく、灰を湿らせて、炭を寸法に切る、香炉の香をたき、花を活けます。



In the Chaso-kenwa Oda Yuraku says in the course if a chat that Takayama Ukon suffered from a malady in his Teaism, and that was the disease of overcleanliness, though he was able and resourceful in the ceremony. Cleanliness was such a disease with him that he did not understand what it meant. Not only the Roji but every possible place, even under the verandah, he was always cleaning in season and out of it. Konoe Iehiro observes that the custom of spreading pine needles in the Roji arose in the time of Oribe, who had them spread one very bleak morning to hide the inhospitable coldness of the ground and make it look more cosy.

織田有楽はチャソケンワと言う茶の湯書の中で高山右近の茶の病について書いています。右近は極度の潔癖性でまた、茶の湯の巧者でもあって、すべてを清潔にするあまり茶の湯本来の意味を理解できない。近衛家熙は露地に松葉をまくということについて織部の話を例にあげて、夜まだ暗いうちに葉をまくのが心地よい景色になる、っと助言しています。



The incense differs according to the season of the year, Ner-ko being used in winter, the kinds called Jin or Byakudan in summer, while at the end of spring and beginning of autumn that called Kokukobei or Ume-ga-ko is most suitable.

香は季節によって変わります。練香は冬でビャクダンやジンは夏使われ、春の終わりと秋の始まりにはコクコベイまたはウメガカと言う名前の香が一般的に使われます。

About nine o'clock in the morning, if the meeting is to be at noon, a low fire made in the hearth or Furo, and the kettle put on with the lid slightly raised to let out the steam, so that the air of the Tea-room does not get too dry.

もしお昼に茶の湯が始まるとすれば、炉や風炉は朝9時頃には火を起こしておきます。そして、釜を掛け、蓋をずらして置いて湿気が茶室内へほどよく行き渡るように気配りします。

The waiting-arbour is to be swept carefully, and smoking-tray, hand-warmer, writing-paper, Tanzaku paper and tined paper for verse-writing and a writing-box placed ready.

待合を綺麗に掃除、たばこ盆、手あぶり、懐紙、短冊や色紙を箱に整えます。

There should also be a kettle with hot water and hot-water cups, but no tea.

お湯の沸いた釜と暖められた碗が置かれ、白湯を客は飲みます。

In the Arbour should be laid out copies of the programme of the meeting and also of the menu of the repast.

今日の献立やしつらえを書いた会記を置いておきます。

Sandals are provided here for the guests and also high clogs and a wide umbrella-like hat if it rains.

客のための草履が置かれ、雨の用意として下駄と傘が準備されています。

At about ten o'clock water is thrown over the stepping-stones and sprinkled in the Inner and Outer Roji to give a cool appearance.

10時には飛び石をはじめ内、外露地へ涼しさの演出として水をまきます。

This is not necessary to any extent in the winter.

冬には水はまきません。



The Roji is watered from the second to the tenth month, but in winter it is only cleaned, but the stone by the Wriggling-in entrance must never be wetted. Watering is done three times during a Cha-no-yu : before the arrival of the guests, in the Interval in the middle when they go out of the Tea-room, and when they leave. It should, of course, be done gently, and it is very bad to throw a lot of water about just when the guests are arriving, wetting oneself and making the trees and everything else look soaked.

露地に水をまくのは10月までで、冬は掃除をするだけにします。もちろん、躙り口(にじりぐち)の石には夏でも水はまいてはいけません。茶の湯においては水打ちは三回、客の到着前、中立ち、客が去った後です。水もたくさんをまくのはいけません、びしょびしょではなく、お客が見た目でしっとりとしている感じですね。



It is well, too, to see that the lanterns are ready for lighting, for one never knows how long the meeting may last, and nothing should be left to chance.

灯篭に火を入れる準備も整えておかなければなりません。茶の湯がいつ終わるかは誰にも分からないから、あたふたしてはいけないのです。

When the preparations are complete the host changes his clothes and waits till the guests have all arrived.

準備を完璧にして、亭主は着替え、客を待ちます。



The number of guests must not exceed five, and two or three are best. The fewer the better if the host is at all inexperienced, for there may be some confusion if he does not remember how to direct matters. The great object of both host and guests is that everything shall go simply and smoothly. (Nambo-roku.) In the case of a very distinguished guest of high rank the host is to watch for his coming and go out to meet him some distance, and so bring him in. He must also escort him some considerable part of the way back and call on him the next day to thank him for coming and inquire after his health.

客の人数は五人をこえないように、二人か三人がベストです。亭主の経験が不足していると全体へ気配りがなされずに混乱するでしょう。もっとも大切なことは客と亭主が円滑に何事もなく淡々と茶の湯が進められていくことなのです。(南坊禄)特別な地位やえらい人を茶の湯に招くときは、亭主は特別の配慮をしなければなりません。招待、出迎え、後のお礼伺いなどが必要です。



This is announced to him by the chief guest, whereupon he again goes into the Tea-room, puts the lid of the kettle right on, and sweeps the room.

正客からの合図があり、亭主は茶室にいったん戻り、釜の蓋を閉めて部屋を清めます。

He then takes the feather brush and dusts the lid of the kettle and the edge of the hearth.

羽箒で釜蓋と炉縁を清めます。

The kettle lid is then slightly lifted as before.

ふたたび釜蓋をずらしておく。

If a Tea-shelf is used this also is dusted.

棚が使われている場合はそれも清めます。

Then the Kakemono is straightened and anything else that may have been overlooked is put right, after which the water in the Basin is again changed and the ladle put properly in place, while if it is very cold weather a covered bucket of hot water is also provided.

床の掛け物を開きすべてがきちんと準備されたことを確認したら、手水鉢の水を新しく入れ替え柄杓をきちんと置きます。もし寒い日だったら、覆いをして湯を入れておきます。

The host then goes out to meet the guests.

そして、亭主は客を迎えるのです。
