渡辺宗安
Watanabe Soan, otherwise known as Mozuya, was a Tea Master of Sakai in Izumi.
渡辺宗安は、別名万代屋宗安として知られ泉堺の茶匠の一人です。
He was a great favorite of Ishida Kazushige, and just before the battle of Sekigahara.
関ヶ原の戦直前まで石田三成の庇護を受けていました。
When Ishida advanced to Ogaki, on the tenth day of the ninth month, Soan came into his camp to wish him good luck.
石田三成の軍が大垣に進軍した九月十日、宗安は激励の為彼のもとを尋ねました。
Ishida was delighted to see him, and in the course of the interview said : “You may remember when some time after the death of the Taiko, we were having a meal together and at the end the page came to serve Sake and I put out my rice bowl absent-mindedly.
三成は彼の顔を見て歓待し会話を交わします。「太閤さまが亡くなれた時の事を覚えておいでか、一所に食事をしていた時、執事がお酒を運んで来てワシはご飯茶碗を差し出してしまったわ。

この帝国の行く末を思うあまり、結果この様な行動を起こす事を、あの時すでに決心していたのだと思う。
As I was ceaselessly scheming and planning to meet this crisis, I became quite unaware of my surroundings and forgot even about my meals, so you can understand my strange and abrupt behavior.
お恥ずかしい行動は、この危機に直面し、周りの状況や食事を忘れるほど集中していた事を理解して下さい。
Well, you know that Tea-caddy called Kan Katatsuki that I bought of you some years ago.
話はかわるが、何年か前そなたから譲って頂いたKan肩衝の茶入れ覚えておいでか。
I wish to return it to you now, for if I should fall in the coming fight, it might easily get burnt or lost, and it would be an exceedingly great pity that anything should happen to so rare a thing.
これをそなたへお返し申したい。今回の戦いに敗れた場合、消失や行方知れずになってしまうかもしれない。貴重な宝物の損失になってしまうので守ってほしい。
So do you take it away with you make your tea with it every day in memory of me.
そなたが持ち、茶を点て、私の遺志としてほしい。
And if my luck should be good you can give it me back and I will pay you for it again.”
もし武運あらば、その時は、もう一度私が買い戻すこととしたいのだ。」
So Soan agreed to take it with him, though he professed himself convinced that Ishida would be successful, and returned again to Sakai .
宗安は茶入を受け取り、三成の勝利を願い確信し堺へ戻って行きました。
Now after Kazushige's death Ieyasu was searching for this Tea-caddy and some one told him that it had been given by him to Soan.
そして石田三成が死に、家康がその茶入の行方を調査、宗安に茶入が渡された事が知れました。
So he at once sent to Sakai for the Tea Master, but he had already disappeared and no one knew in the least where he was.
彼は堺に使いを出し宗安を捜しましたが、彼はすでに逐電し行方は分かりませんでした。
Ieyasu then had his portrait sent all round the Empire and had a strict search made for him.
家康は尚も国中におふれを出し、彼を捜しました。
Now in Fukuoka in Chikuzen there was a certain priest who was a great adept at Tea.
筑前福岡、一人の侘茶匠がいます。
He lived in a poor, but very neat hut, and was evidently an esthete of no ordinary kind, so that all sorts of people were anxious to become his pupils for Cha-no-yu.
彼は清貧に暮らしていましたが、きちんとした帽子を被りとても品格がありました。彼の茶の湯の弟子になりたくて連日沢山の人が彼のもとに集まっていました。
And Kuroda Nagamasa, who had greatly distinguished himself in the fight at Sekigahara, obtained the fief of Chikuzen and made Fukuoka his capital.
黒田長政、関ヶ原で武功を上げ筑前福岡の領主としてやって来た領主です。
So when he heard of this monk he sent for him without delay and when he entered his presence immediately said to him, “You are Soan of Sakai, I think.
彼の耳にも侘茶匠の噂はもちろん入り、すぐに人を差し向け出頭を命じます。会うとすぐ「そなたは宗安だな。
And that being so you have the two Tea-caddies called Mozuya Katatsuki and Soan Katatsuki in your possession.”
茶入を二つ所持していると思うがどうじゃ?」と長政が問いただしました。
“It is as you say,” replied the monk, “I am Soan, and these tea utensils belong to Kazushige,” and he told Kuroda without hesitation how they had been given to him by Ishida on the eve of Sekigahara with instructions to keep them if he should be killed.
「おおせの通り」と宗安は答え、「たしかに私が宗安ですが、おっしゃっている茶道具は三成殿にお譲りいたした物です。」関ヶ原の戦いの前夜までお持ちでしかもその後処刑されました。どうして私が、、。
“Well, you must hand them over,” replied Kuroda,” for they may be liable to confiscation.”
「そなたに手渡された」黒田は答え「そして今もっておる。」
Soan laughed.
宗安笑って。
“I may perhaps regret parting with them,” he said ruefully, “but it cannot be avoided.
「別れるのはつろうございますが、、」彼は悲しそうに「しかたございませんね。」
Moreover since I sold them to Kazushige and received the money for them I cannot say that they are really mine, so there is no question of refusal.”
「三成さまにお譲りして金子を頂戴いたし、すでにわたしの物ではございませんから拒否は出来ません。」
And he took them from his bosom and gave them to Kuroda and they were forwarded to Edo , together with an exact account of Soan's speech and behavior.
懐から取り出し黒田長政へ差し出しました。そして、それらは宗安の供述調書と供に江戸へ送られました。
“He seems to be an honest fellow,” was the comment of Ieyasu, “and I think what he say is true.
「彼は神妙であったな」家康は言い「真実であろう、
As he has done no harm Kuroda may deal kindly with him.”
黒田殿にはおとがめ無しで彼を遇すように」と申し伝えました。
So Kuroda gladly took him into his service and gave him an allowance.
黒田長政は彼をもてなし、褒美を取らせたそうです。
Soan had been very useful to Ishida in communicating with the daimyous who were favorable to his cause.
宗安は石田三成にとって、賛同する大名達との連絡戦術上極めて都合の良い存在でした。
For in order not to rouse any suspicion and also to prevent any leakage of his plans, he pretended that his Tea Master, Watanabe Soan, had incurred his displeasure in some way, and expelled him from his province.
疑念などを持たれたり、密告漏洩の危険がなく彼の計画伝播の為に茶坊主を使う、それが渡辺宗安でした。彼が不埒な行いをしたとして放逐を言い渡します。
Soan fled to Aizu where he communicated the plans to Uesugi Kagekatsu, who signified his assent and took him into his service.
宗安は会津に飛び上杉景勝に三成の計画を伝え、協力の約束を取り付けます。
When Ishida heard of this he pretended to complain to Kagekatsu of his employing a man he had punished and Uesugi also sent him away.
三成は景勝協力の報を受け、今度は上杉領から彼を放逐しました。
He then went to Mito and told Satake Yoshinobu all about it.
次は水戸の佐竹義宣の所へ行って同様の仕事をします。
Turned out by him too he went in turn to Komatsu in Kaga and Kita-no-sho in Echizin, by which journeys Niwa Nagashige and Aoki Kazunori were apprised of Ishida's designs.
その後、加賀国小松の丹羽長重や越前国北ノ庄の青木一矩などに赴き、三成の計画を伝え協力を取り付けています。
At last he found his way back to Sawayama and reported to Ishida.
その後沢山へ帰国、石田三成に詳細を報告しました。
Yet another Tea Master, Imai Sokyu of Sakai , was equally useful to Ieyasu, for it was he who was the go-between who arranged the political marriages between to Tokugawa relations and those of other great lords that were the cause of the rupture between Ishida and Ieyasu as being contrary to the late Hideyoshi's covenant.
同じ堺の茶人、今井宗久は家康の茶坊主です。徳川家とその他有力大名の政略結婚の片棒を担ぎ奔走しました。秀吉後の招集会議において家康と三成の対峙が決定的となり、双方が動いたのです。
