ODA URAKUSAI'S MISTAKE
織田有楽齋の未熟
Oda Gengoro Nagamasu was the younger brother of Oda Nobunaga, and a disciple of Sen-no-Rikyu.
織田源五郎長益は織田信長の弟で千利休の弟子の一人です。
He took the title of Yurakuken Jo-an on his retirement.
引退後、有楽軒如庵となりました。
He was a famous tea-master and became the founder of the Yuraku School of Tea, being known after his death as Cha-no-Sasho (Chief Tea Master).
有名な茶人の一人で有楽流を作った人でもあり、没後、茶の湯流派の祖と知られています。
One day he went to visit Rikyu and found the Master fitting a lid to a Tea-caddy.
ある日、有楽は利休の家を訪ねた時、利休は茶入とその蓋を合わせていました。
He selected an old one and observed to Yuraku that this suited much better than the larger sized one it already had.
彼は古い物を選び、この組み(蓋と茶入)はいつもの大きめの物よりも良いなっと有楽へ言いました。
Yuraku expressed his admiration.
有楽は賞賛を込めた感想を言いました。
Some time after this Yuraku fitted an old lid to one of his own tea-caddies and showed it to Rikyu for his approval.
その後、有楽は自分が所有する茶入に古い蓋を合わせ、利休の賛成を得に彼の元へ行きます。
“I don't think much of your discrimination,” was the comment.
「そなたの眼識はよろしくない」っとの返事
“A new lid would suit this one better.
「新しい蓋の方が良い」
A stork's bill dose not fit a duck's neck.
「コウノトリのくちばしはアヒルの首とは会わない」
Mere imitation without regard for what is harmonious is quite contrary to the spirit of Teaism.”
「調和を意識しない浅はかな単なる模倣は、茶の湯の精神とは間反する事である。」っとたしなめられました。
