TODO TAKATORA'S GOLDEN TEA KETTLE
藤堂高虎の黄金の茶釜
Todo Izumi-no-kami Takatora had a golden tea kettle, the lid of which somehow got lost; and though his servants searched for it everywhere they could not find it.
藤堂泉守高虎は黄金の茶釜を所有していて、ある時その蓋が紛失、執事達が捜しましたが見つかりませんでした。
When they told Takatora he ordered them to get another one made.
高虎は新しい物を作ることにしました。
“It will cost a great amount to make one of pure gold,” the craftsman objected when given the order, “but if you make it of copper gilt it can be done for a tenth of the sum.”
「純金ですと高額になってしまいますが、、」と職人は続け、「銅に金箔ですと十分の一の予算で出来ます」と進言しました。
“Make it of pure gold as before,” said Takatora when this was reported to him, “for it is not impossible that this one may be lost like the first, and if it should be found not to be pure gold, then the reputation of the kettle itself will suffer and people will think that is only gilt too.
「前回同様に純金で頼む」と高虎は命令、「もし又紛失したとして、それが金箔と判れば茶釜全部が金箔で出来ているとの噂がたってしまうだろう。
One cannot be too careful about the repute of one's family treasures.”
家宝の評判には特に注意が必要である。」 と言いました。
