KAMIYA SOTAN ENTERTAINS HIDEYOSHI

神谷宗湛秀吉をもてなす

 

 

 

* Sometimes European wine was used at Cha-no-yu.

茶の湯では 、 時折ヨーロッパのワインが提供されました。

Tokutomi quotes an instance from the Sotan Nikki.

徳富氏は宗湛日記から実例を引用しています。

“On the ninth of the second month of the year 1600, Ishida Mitsunari entertained Ukita Hideie, Date Masamune, Konishi Yukinaga and himself (Kamiya Sotan).

西暦1600年二月九日、石田三成は、宇喜多秀家、伊達正宗、小西行長と神谷宗湛を交え茶の湯を催しています。

They used the Daisu.

仕立ては 台子飾り。

The Tea-bowl and Tea-caddy were of modern pottery and the other utensils readymade.

茶碗と茶入は新物で 、 他の道具類は既成品でした。

It was late at night before they went home.

時刻は帰宅前の夜遅く 開催されました 。

They discussed all manner of things and a lot of curious objects were brought out for inspection.

彼らは策謀のかぎりを尽くし、調査状況から導き出された重要な案件を精査したと思われます。

They drank grape wine and five colored liquor.

記録には、 ワインと五色の蒸留酒を飲んだとあります。

It came from Nagasaki . (Kinsei Nihon Kokuminshi.)

近世日本国民史によれば、これらは皆長崎から運ばれました。

As Tokutomi observes, Nagasaki was the headquarters of the forigen drink trade as well as of Christianity.

徳富氏によれば、長崎はキリスト教伝道の本拠地であると同時に外国酒等の貿易基地でした。

As to the Sotan Nikki or Memor ie s of Kamiya Sotan, some scholars doubt its authenticity, but according to Takahashi Tatsuo the descriptions of Cha-no-yu and the details of the famous vessels given in it are certainly accurate, and he therefore thinks that, even if not written by Sotan himself, it is more than probable that its facts are reliable to the extent of the author's knowledge.

宗湛日記(神谷宗湛の回想)について、幾人かの記述者はその信憑性について疑いを持っています。が、高橋達夫氏は著書「茶の湯」の中で、使われていた道具を観る限り本物であると記述しています。彼はこう推察しています、宗湛自身が書いた詳細であること以外、茶の達人しか到達出来ない領域をより正確に記録することはできない。

 

 

In the tenth month of the first year of Bunroku (1592) Hideyoshi arrived at the Hakata in the course of his Korean campaign and Kamiya Sotan invited him to his residence in Naraya M a chi.

文禄元年十月、秀吉は朝鮮出兵の件で博多を訪問、神谷宗湛はならや町の屋敷に彼を招待しました。

Since Sotan was descended from the house of Sugawara his gate curtain had on it the Umebachi or conventionalized plum-blossom familiar on all Tenjin Shrines.

宗湛の家系は菅原家で暖簾には梅鉢と言う梅模様を具象化した家紋が記され、これは、天神神社と同じ文様です。

In a large Tokonoma twelve feet long hung a pair of pictures of bamboo in black and white by T'an Shih Jui of T‘ang that he had recived from Hideyoshi, and in a smaller Tokonoma beside it a horizontal picture of cocks and grapes by Yun Wai of T'ang, an heirloom of his family, beside many other valuable antiques.

大きな床の間には、二間(12フィート 365、76cm)あろうかと言う唐代 T'an Shih Jui 筆の紅白の竹の絵、これは秀吉が与えた物です。隣の小さい床の間には唐代 Yun Wai の葡萄と鶏の展望図が掛かっています。そして彼の家伝来の宝物が並んでいました。

There were kneeling-cushions for the guests of Yamamoto brocade, and two pairs of screens with wild gees among reeds by Kano Motonobu stood round the wall.

山本錦織の座布団が置かれ、狩野元信筆一組の「アシと野生馬の群れ」の絵が壁に掛かっていました。

A leopard skin was placed in the seat of honor for Hideyoshi.

秀吉には特別のヒョウの敷物が置かれています。

The tea-room was of two mats.

茶室は二畳。

On the hearth was the kettle called ‘Johari' or ‘World-reflecting' and on the dais the great jar called ‘Omokage' or ‘Vision.'

「上張釜(反射する世界)」が炉に掛かり、台の上の水指は「面影(見通す力)」。

In the Tokonoma hung a small scroll of ‘Evening Rain on the Hsiao Hsiang River ,' and beside it stood the renowned Bunrin tea jar.

床の間には「 Hsiao Hsiang 河の夕立」の軸が掛かり、横には有名な「文林」の 茶入 が 飾られて います。

All the houses adjoining for some distance had been taken by Sotan also and were draped with his crested curtains exquisitely furnished inside for the reception of the generals of the Taiko's train.

宗湛の絶妙なしつらえによって物が配置され、それらは家紋入りの布が掛けられていて、太閤一行接待の為に用意されていました。

Hideyoshi with Oda Yuraku entered and took his seat in the place prepared for him, while Odera Kyumu, Nakayama Yamashiro-no-kami and Sobon retired into the room behind.

秀吉が織田有楽と供に用意された場所に着座し、 小寺休夢 と中山山城守それに Sobon が続いて着座しました。

Tokugawa Ieyasu and some ten other nobles with him were received in the great reception room and in the neighboring houses, and the number that sat down to the splendid banquet that Sotan provided was more than five hundred in all.

以前、 徳川家康と十人の重鎮達は隣の建物の特別室にて、宗湛が用意した豪華な宴を催しました。

When Hideyoshi had received Sotan and his wife in audience refreshments were offered and he entered the tea-room with Oda Yuraku and Sobon, and Sotan served them with tea.

秀吉は宗湛と婦人の謁見を受け、軽い食事が提供され、織田有楽、 Sobon を伴い茶室へ入り宗湛が茶を点てました。

The Taiko looked long and intently at the picture and the Bunrin tea jar and then turned to Yuraku and observed : “These things don't look quite right.

太閤は絵と文林 茶入 をじっくりと拝見し 、 有楽を振り返り「これらは 大したことは無いな 。

It would be better to alter the Tokonoma and put a shelf by side of it.”

床の間の物とその横の棚の物とを差し替えた方がよくないかい。」

Then turning to Sotan, “That's the sort of thing Speki and Sokyu would have said.”

そして宗湛を振り返り「これらはSpekiの種類だと宗久が言ったような気がするが。」

And he went on to converse about various things in high good humour; then suddenly, unable to repress his admiration for the scroll of evening rain, he asked Sotan point blank, “I say, Bozu, will you let me have this picture?”

彼特有の気の利いたユーモアで取り合わせを 貶し 、そして直ぐに、午後の雨の軸を手に取ると、宗湛へ「坊主、この絵をワシによこすか?」っと言いました。

“This picture was brought from China by great grandfather Jutei who went there in the era Bummei (1469-87) and it came into his hands in rather a remarkable manner.

「その絵は祖父である寿定が文明 (1469-87) に中国へ渡りやっとの思いで手に入れて持ち帰った絵にございます。」

Higashiyama Dono and Ouchi Dono often requested him to let them have it, but he would never part with it, so, though I greatly desire to accede to any wish your Lordship any express, it would seem disrespectful to my ancestor should I lightly give it away.

「東山殿や大内殿もずいぶんと所望 され ましたが、こればかりは手離さずに来ました。殿下の仰せですが 、 その思い継承いたしたく願います。手放したとなると祖先に対し申し訳が立たなくなってしまいます。」

I might however be able to exchange it for something, if your lordship has anything of equal value you would like to give me for it.”

「何かと交換し て下さる として、それが、殿下の領地同等と価値がある 物を 私に下さるでしょうか。」

When Sotan calmly made this proposal Hideyoshi seemed not at all offended, but after considering for a while slapped his knee and exclaimed, “Yes, I have.

There's that big picture of the ‘Ships returning from a Far off Shore': But , I say, Bozu, have you got a Toko in your house large enough to hang it?”

宗湛が冷静に秀吉に逆提案をし 、 が さすが秀吉、 意に介することなく間髪入れずに膝を叩き叫びました 。 「わしならそうするぞ!陸地から遠く離れた 海から 船が戻って来た絵がある、がだ 坊主 、この大きな絵を掛ける床がそちには作れるのか?」

This picture was one of the masterpieces of Mu Ch'I of T'ang and had more than three hundred ships painted on a surface nine feet wide.

絵は唐のMu Ch‘iの代表作の一つで9フィート四方に300百以上の船が描かれています。

So Hideyoshi got the picture of evening rain and rejoiced as at the possession of the jade-stone of Pien Ho that was worth fifteen cities.

秀吉は午後の雨の絵を取り 、 十五の都市に匹敵するPien Hoの翡翠を手に入れた喜びに匹敵するような笑みを浮かべました。

Moreover, Sotan presented him with ten rolles of fine damask and three pounds of rare incense as well, while the Taiko gave in return a hundred pieces of silver, and a set of gold screens painted with plum trees under snow by Sankaku.

加えて、宗湛は上等なダマスク織を十巻と珍しいお香3ポンドを彼に献上、太閤は返礼として百個の銀とSankaku作の雪の桜が書かれた金屏風対を贈りました。

So the entertainment came to an end most successfully and Hideyoshi took his leave in great delight.

そして今回の催しは大成功のうちに終了し秀吉は 、 感謝をし退室しました。

Sotan and his wife saw him off at the gate, but as he was getting into his palanquin he seemed to hesitate as though there was something he had forgotten.

宗湛と妻は彼を門まで送りましたが、何か、籠に乗り込みながら、そわそわした雰囲気を読み取りました。

The fact was that he had arranged with Sobun beforehand to make off with the Bunrin Tea-caddy while Sotan and his wife were both at the gate and the Tea-room was left unguarded.

それは、彼がSobunとしつらえるためにあらかじめ取り置いていた文林茶入をそのままにして、宗湛と妻が両人とも玄関に出ているので茶室は誰もいないと言う事になります。

And this Sotan had foreseen.

そして宗湛は予感がしました。

“Ah, your lordship,” he suggested most courteously , “have you forgotten something? Is it this, I wonder?”

「あ!殿下は」彼は礼儀正しく示唆しました「何かお忘れのではと思いますが。」

And he pushed back the upper part of his costume and showed the Bunrin hanging round his neck.

彼の服の上を押し返して首にぶら下げてある文林 茶入れ を示しました。

“I have not neglected your lordship's advice to take care of it.”

「殿下のお教えを忘れずに注意しております。」

Hideyoshi laughed heartily, “Yes you're a sharp fellow , Tsukushi Bozu,” he said, as he got into his palanquin .

秀吉は元気に笑い「そうだ!筑紫坊主よおぬしは切れる男よ」

Sotan came with him part of the way and when they came to the shore at Sumiyoshi-mura the Taiko stopped and talked over the affairs of the province with him, and with the final advice, “You put as much money as you can into trade at Nagoya,” he hurried on to that city.

宗湛は秀吉に同行し住吉村の海岸まで来ました。太閤は彼と供にこの地方の様子を見て「名古屋で出来る限り多くのお金を商売に投資しろ」彼は急ぎその街へ急ぎました。

Probably this Tsukushi Bouz was the only man in the Empire who would have stood up to the Taiko in this way.

多分、筑紫坊主はと太閤と堂々と渡り合った唯一の人物ではないでしょうか。

Sotan afterwards took Hideyoshi's advice and made a shelf by the side of the Toko for the Bunrin caddy, and this style of Tokonoma is called Bunrin Toko after it.

宗湛は後 、 秀吉の忠告を聞き文林茶入用の棚を床の横に作りました。後にその床の間の形は 、 文林床と呼ばれる様になりました。

This Tea-room is now in the grounds of Hiraoka Ryosuke of Tenjin machi in Hakata.

この茶室は現在、博多天神町の平岡良介の庭に有ります。

 

 

 

* The story of Hideyoshi trying to steal the Bunrin Cha-ire with Sobon's (or, according to another version, Ishida's) assistance may not be very creditable , but of course had he succeeded he would have made a present quite adequate to the occasion.

秀吉が S obonを使って 宗湛から文林茶入を盗もうとした話 (石田編も有ります) は良い話だとは思っていないでしょうが、もちろん、彼が成功したのは 半分は当人同士も分かっていたからでしょうが。

And moreover it must be remembered that he could at any time have found some pretext for taking it by force.

さらに忘れてはならないのは、彼の弁解はいつでも権力によって手に入れる事は可能だったと言う事です。
