OTOMO SORIN AND HIS TEA-CADDIES
大友宗麟と彼の茶入
The Shogun Ahikaga Yoshiteru once presented Otomo Sorin with a Katatsuki Tea-caddy.
将軍足利義輝は大友宗麟にある一つの肩衝茶入を贈りました。
This he in turn gave to Usuki Nyudo Shosatsu, one of his retainers, on account of his knowledge of Cha-no-yu.
彼は、それを茶の湯達者と言うことで家臣の臼杵入道紹冊に与えます。
In the fourteenth year of Tensho (1586) Shimazu Yoshitada, lord of Satsuma, made a raid into Bungo and Yoshimune, Sorin's son, abandoned the castle and fled, whereupon this Katatsuki fell into the hands of Shimazu.
天正十四年（１５８６）、薩摩藩主島津義忠が豊後の宗麟の子、吉宗を攻め城を侵略、その肩衝茶入は島津の所有物になりました。
On the third month of the following year Yoshihisa was retiring to his own province when Saiki Koresada attacked him as he was crossing the Azusa pass on the border of Bungo and Hyuga.
三ヵ月後、島津義久は佐伯太郎是貞に攻められ、豊後、日向の境界である”あずさ”へさがります。
The Satsuma men got the worst of it and fell back in haste, and among the baggage the victors captured they found the Tea-caddy.
薩摩軍の撤退は急を強いられあっという間でしたので、その茶入は残されていました。
Koresada was immensely pleased to got it, and it eventually found its way into the possession of Tokugawa Ieyasu who prized it greatly and gave it the name of Saiki Katatsuki.
太郎是貞は茶入が戻ったことを大いに喜びます。その後茶入は、徳川家康へ渡り、武勇にちなみ「佐伯肩衝」と名付けられました。
A famous Cha-ire is that called Uesugi Hyotan, the first of the six finest gourd-shaped Meibutsu.
大名物天下六瓢箪の一つ、「上杉瓢箪」と言う茶入があります。
Otomo Sorin, the King Francis Otomo beloved of the Jesuits, had a very high opinion of it, for when Mori Motonari was besieging his younger brother Ouchi Yoshinaga, he sent word to Sorin to ask if he should spare his brother's life or put him to death.
大友宗麟、洗礼名キングフランシス大友、国内でも高貴なクリスチャンの一人。毛利元就が弟の大内義長を攻め包囲した折、元就から宗麟へ、彼の命を取る他に何か良い方法はないかの相談をします。
“You can put him to death if you like,” relied the saintly King Francis, “for I very much wish to have that Hyatan Tea-caddy that is in his possession.”
元就から信頼されているクリスチャン、キングフランシス大友は言います。「弟の命を戦とは言え奪えるでしょうか？」説教して和睦を提案。「私は彼の所有物である瓢箪茶入を強く望みます、それは彼の命より大切な宝物です。」
So Mori did as suggested and sent Soren the desired Cha-ire.
そして、毛利元就は宗麟が熱望した茶入を義長から没収し事をうまく収め、次に、宗麟へその茶入を渡すことを提案します。
It was well for him that Moir himself was no connoisseur.
この出来事は毛利元就が茶の湯道具の鑑定家では無く、何の興味もない事を指し示しています。
