RIKYU AND DO-AN.

利休と道安

 

 

Sen Do-an was Rikyu's eldest son, also his pupil.

 

千道安は利休の長男であり弟子でもあります。

 

He took the title Mino-o and Fukyusai.

 

眠翁や可休斎と号しました。

 

One day when the snow was falling he asked his father to take Tea with him.

 

ある雪が降る日、彼は父である利休を茶の湯に招待しました。

 

When Rikyu arrived at his house and entered the Roji that led to the Tea-room he looked round the garden in front and saw a figure wearing a rain-coat and wide straw hat digging up with a hoe some vegetables that were growing there.

 

利休が道安宅へ到着、茶室へ通じる露地へ入って庭を見渡すと、蓑と笠の姿でくわを持ち野菜を収穫している人の姿を見ました。

 

Wondering who it could be, he kept his eye on him till he went into the house and then saw that it was Do-an himself.

 

何をしてるやら、、彼が家へ入って行くまで目をこらして見ていると、それは道安本人でした。

 

This excited his interest and he went on to the Tea-room where the usual simple meal was served.

 

興味を抱きながら茶室へ、なぜなら、普段は簡単な食事しか出されないからです。

 

In more than usually good spirits he lifted the cover of the soup bowl to find within it a broth of fresh vegetables and Suzuki fish.

 

普段よりもてなす算段で、お椀には鱸(スズキ)と新鮮な野菜の汁が入って運ばれて来たのです。

 

Immediately his face clouded. “When I came into the Roji just now and saw you digging up the vegetables on the snow the sight of you in your straw coat and hat struck me as very fitting and elegant. It showed kind solicitude on your part and naturally gave me great pleasure. But what is this fish doing here? Cordiality is the first principle of Tea, but everything should be unostentatious and in keeping. How ridiculous that a son of mine should do a thing so wanting in understanding.”

 

利休の顔が曇り、そして言いました。「露地へ入った時にお前が笠に蓑の姿で雪の中、野菜を掘っているのを見たよ、とてもよい姿で上品だった。そして自然な心使いがとても嬉しかった。しかし、この魚はいただけない!思いやりのある気持は茶の原則であり、それを見せびらかさない事がもっと大切なんだ。解っているだろう私の息子とあろう者が、なんとばかげた事をするのだ!」

 

•  This literal meaning of the word ‘Chiso,' ordinarily used for any entertainment, is ‘Running about or ‘Exertion,' for the proper kind of treatment of a guest consists in exerting oneself to the utmost to welcome him rather than in spending a lot of money for delicacies.

 

この“もてなす”意味の事を普通“馳走”と言います。沢山のお金を使って優美さだけを示すのでは無く、よりお客を歓待し、心を込めたもてなしをする亭主の精神です。

 

Do-an was embarrassed and apologized profusely, but when he saw Rikyu's meaning a great enlightenment dawned on him and he made much progress in taste as the result of this incident.

 

道安はまごつき過度に謝りました。しかし、この出来事で利休が言った言葉を理解し、彼は悟り成長したのです。

 

Rikyu once went with Do-an to see a certain acquaintance, and when they came to the fence in the middle of the Roji, Do-an pointed out the antique-looking gate, remarking : "That's interesting, it gives the path a solitary appearace."

 

利休、道安を伴いある一人の数寄者の所へ行った時の事です。露地の中ほどの柵に来た時、道安が古い戸を見つけて観察しながら言いました、「素晴らしい!寂しい感じを出していますね」。

 

But Rikyu shook his head. "I don't think so," he replied, "this looks as though it had been brought from some mountain temple a long way off and the labour required to bring it must have cost give a really quiet and lonely look to a garden, but this sort of thing shows us what kind of Tea this gentleman practices."

 

しかし、利休は首を振りながら言いました。「私はそうは思わない、どこか遠くの山の寺を感じさせる。そして、静けさと寂しさをしつらえた労力に感服する。まさに、数寄者のなせる業を私たちに示している。」

 

Rikyu had an ac qu aintance who lived in a very simple way, and one eveni n g he called to see him.

 

利休は清貧に生きる一人の知人がいて、ある午後面談をしました。

 

While he was admiring the unaffected style of the furnishing of the room he heard a noise outside and looked out and saw his host go out with a lantern and a bamboo and knock down a citron from a tree which he brought back in his sleeve.

 

他の影響を受けることなく、独特のスタイルを貫く部屋を敬服しながら観察して待っていると、外で音が聞こえ、見ると、亭主がランタンと竹を持ち、シトロンの木から実を落とし、袖に入れて戻って来るのが見えました。

 

Rikyu concluded that he meant this for some sort of relish, and so it proved, for he served citron Miso.

 

利休は合点します、シトロン味噌を馳走してもらえるだろうと。

 

He then poured out Sake and with it offered some fine rice-cake which he said came from Osaka .

 

彼は酒を注ぎ、大阪から取り寄せたと言う美味しい米だんごを馳走しました。

 

Now that spoiled the whole thing for Rikyu, because it at once suggested the feeling that the unaffected simplicity of the rest was really carefully prepared, so he excused himself by saying he had an appointment in the city and went off without more ado, though his host pressed him to stay.

 

この瞬間にすべてが台無しなってしまって、なぜなら、初めの期待、すなわち、影響を受けない簡素な食は実は周到に準備されたものである事が分かり。彼は亭主の引止めを断り、街での約束があると言って退出しました。

 

On the other hand, he was invited once by a certain Somu who was a man of taste, and in this case the host came out and told him he had got some fine water and took the kettle off went into the Mizuya whit it.

 

他方、利休は Somuと言う味のある人物を訪ねています。彼は利休にとても美味しい水が手に入ったからと言って、ヤカンを持ち水屋へ取りに行きました。

 

Meanwhile Rikyu went to the hearth and put on some charcoal, and by this time the host came back with the dripping kettle.

 

その間に、利休は炉へにぢり寄り炭を整えます。亭主、そして、清水の入ったヤカンを運んで来ました。

 

It was all very naturally done and both of them were quite in accord.

 

それはとても自然で、お互いが調和のとれた所作でした。

 

Thus one must entertain naturally and without conscious effort.

 

これは一つの最も自然な悟りであり、故意の努力を超えたハーモニーです。

 

Rules are laid down to be observed to some extent, but one must not take them too seriously.

 

ルールとは幾つかの範囲の中に規定されています。しかし、過度な履行は誤りを生みます。

 

Only a stupid person will glue the bridges of a harp in place.

 

愚かな者は橋桁を地面に張り付け、遊びを作らない。

 

On one occasion when Hideyoshi had arranged to visit Rikyu, snow began to fall on the evening of the previous day, so the Master immediately went into the garden and laid round cushions on all the stepping-stones, taking them away the next morning before the dawn broken.

 

秀吉が利休宅へ赴く機会がありました。訪問前日の午後から雪が降り始めました。利休はすぐ庭へ行き、飛び石の上に座布団を置きます。そして、当日朝雪は降っていましたがその座布団を取り払いました。

 

So when the Taiko arrived the whole garden was covered with a mantle of snow and the stepping-stones stood out clear to welcome him.

 

そして、太公秀吉が到着、庭が雪景色に飛び石だけが綺麗に浮かび、彼を迎えたのでした。

 

Hideyoshi was filled with admiration for the quick wit that prompted this device.

 

秀吉は利休の気使いの演出に心から敬服したのでした。

 

When Hideyoshi was starting for his headquarters in the Korean campaign Rikyu made an arrangement of the thorny ‘Kikoku' bush, and everyone immediately took exception to it, exclaiming that thorns were ill-omened in the Tokonoma.

 

秀吉が朝鮮への出兵を始めた時、利休は棘のある低木「枳殻 Kikoku 」を設えました。それを見た人たちは、すぐピンと来て、その床の間の棘は不吉を暗示している事に気付いたのです。

 

But Hosokawa Yusai saw the point at once and murmured the verse, ‘Karatachi no sono mi way agate Kikoku bari .' Whereupon the rest caught his meaning too and were loud in their admiration of the adroit departure from convention. For ‘Karatachi' and ‘Kikoku' are different readings of the same word when it is the name of the plant, but the first, with different characters can also mean ‘Departure for China' (Kara), and the second ‘Return home.'

 

そして、細川幽斎は詩を口にしました「枳殻(からたち)のその実を上げてきこくばり」。

それは空の意味であり、皆が思っていることの叫び、枳殻はからたちと読みますが、また、きこくとも読みます。殻を唐に掛け帰国するとも読ませる訳です。

 

There was a Chajin of Sakai who had a Tea-caddy called Sessan and he used it when Rikyu came.

 

堺で“ Sessan” と言う茶入を持っている茶人がいて、利休を茶に招く時それを使いました。

 

But Rikyu thought nothing of it so its owner smashed it against the trivet on the hearth.

 

しかし、利休は何の反応も示さなかった為、亭主は炉に投げ込んで五徳にあたり壊れてしまったのです。

 

Another guest took away the pieces and put them togther again and gave Cha-no-yu to which he invited Rikyu.

 

別の客がその破片を持ち帰り修復して、再び利休を茶に招きました。

 

This time the Master praised the caddy, so the host returned it to its former owner and told him to take great care of it.

 

今度は、利休は茶入を褒めました。彼は前の持ち主の所へ行ってそれを返して、その事を言いました。

 

Later on someone bought it for a thousand pieces of gold, and noticing that the joins were very rough proposed to have it mended again more neatly and submitted it to Kobori Enshu for his opinion.

 

後に誰かが千両でその茶入れを購入、その理由はとても機知に富み簡単な申し出でだったのです。 小堀遠州をも同意させた動機でした。

 

“If you do that you will spoil it altogether,” was his decision, “for that was just why Rikyu liked it.”

 

結果「もしそうしたらみんな台無しになった」、でも「利休は気に入っていたと言うことだよ。」
