He then served the Kaiseki or light meal that is customary.

Naturally they were all exceedingly delighted, and among the number were some who were so moved that they did not know in the least what they had been offered.

As soon as the meal was finished he gave cups to all the lords and high officials and four of them served the Sake.

Nobunaga entertained all the rest too and was himself present and received them in audience.

The next day he invited all of them to inspect the keep of the castle, and on this occasion Zoni or New Year Soup and choice cakes and sweetmeats were served.

“It is only thought your assistance and faithful service that I have been able to accomplish what I have,” he said, “and therefore I feel the deepest gratitude.”

Whereat all the company bowed with their heads to the ground.
