NABESHIMA NAOSHIGE'S KAKEMONO
鍋島直茂 の掛軸
Nabeshima Naoshige had afine specimen of the writing of Kyodo mounted as a kakemono, and one day his son Motoshige was looking for it but could not find it.
鍋島直茂 は ” きょうどう山 ” の名掛軸を所有していました。ある時、息子の元茂 がその軸を探していましたが見つからず。
When he asked his father.
父に尋ねたところ。
He said he did not know where it had got to, and showed no particular interest in it.
彼も知らないと、つがない返事が返ってきました。
"But," urged the son, "this is one of the most valuable pictures in existence, is it not?"
「しかし」と元茂 は言い、「あの軸は天下の名品でござるのに!」
"Oh," replied the father, "these things are just the fashions of the period.
「おう!」と父、「真に大切な物とは、今までの生き方ぞ!」
I have better things to leave you than that.
「軸よりわしは先に逝く」
I have the retainers I have trained.
「隠居の身であるが、成し遂げて来た。」
That is much more important."
「それをそなたへ渡す事が一番大切じゃ!」
