HIDEYOSHI'S CHA-NO-YU IN THE FIELD
In the twelfth year of Tensho, Toyotomi Hideyoshi was repulsed in the battle of Nagakute in Owari and lost three of his generals, but he paid no attention to this loss but besieged and took all the enemy strongholds in those parts and then started back to the Capital.
When about half-way he called Rikyu and said : “Now let us have a Tea-ceremony to liven up our spirits after the strain of this long campaign.
”So they made tea and the session was just finishing when a messenger came in hurriedly from the front to say that the enemy leader Tokugawa Ieyasu had gone back again to his castle in Owari.
“Did you see this yourself ?” enquired Hideyoshi. “I did, with my own eyes,” replied the messenger.
Hideyoshi turned to Rikyu. “We will have another cup of tea and then we will hurry back to the front,” he observed, and in a short time issued orders for the march.
He was soon in Ise where he forestalled Ieyasu and came to terms with his ally Oda Nobuo.
This was just like Hideyoshi.
In the midst of war he never forgot the graces of life, but amid his esthetic diversions he never neglected military necessities.
