EIYASU ENTERTAINS HIDEYOSHI
家康が秀吉をもてなす
Tokugawa Ieyasu and Maeda Toshiie were once entertained at the castle of Fushimi by Hideyoshi, and as they were leaving he said to Ieyasu, “I am now going to the Juraku Palace and tomorrow on my way back I will pay you a visit.”
徳川家康と前田利家はある時、伏見城にて秀吉の歓待を受けていました。そして彼らが退室しようとしている時に秀吉が家康に向かって言いました。「これから聚楽第に行き、明日戻ってくるのでそなたの所へ行きたい。」
So Ieyasu told his retainers that he would just serve him with a very simple Cha-no-yu, for he would certainly have had his fill of rich food at the Juraku, and bade them sweep the garden and clean the Tea-room while he opened a fresh jar of tea and told his Tea Master to grind it.
家康は家臣達に、明日聚楽第では豪華な食事が振る舞われるだろうから、こちらでは簡素な茶の湯を催す旨を伝え、戻るまでに庭を掃き茶室を清め、新しい茶壺から茶葉を出して茶坊主に挽いておくように命じました。
The next day he came back quickly after attending on Hideyoshi at the Juraku Palace and immediately inspected the tea but found only a very little.
翌日家康は聚楽第での秀吉との面会を終えすぐ戻り、確認すると茶が少ないのに気が付きました。
Sharply he ask the Tea Master the reason and the answer was that Mizuno Kemmotsu, Ieyas's favored page, had drunk up the rest in spite of being told that it was required for distinguished guests.
直ぐ、茶坊主にその理由を尋ねると、家康お気入りの小姓Ｍｉｚｕｎｏ Ｋｅｍｍｏｓｔｕが代わりに、最上のお客の為に用意しておいたもの、お毒見として私が先に飲んで置きましたっと返答しました。
So Ieyasu perforce opened another jar and told them to grind some more, whereupon one of his retainers, Kagatsume Haito, objected that there would not be time before Hideyoshi arrived, and he would probably be irritated if kept waiting, so it would be the lesser evil to serve what little there was.
すると家康は、すぐ他の茶壺から新しいのを出して挽く様に命じました。すると彼の家臣の一人Ｋａｇａｔｓｕｍｅ Ｈａｉｔｏが、秀吉がお見えになっていないのにと言い、準備に待たされれば気分を害されるし、少い方の方が不快指数は低いと反対しました。
“Perhaps you may think you are imitating my example by giving this thrifty advice,” replied Ieyasu, “but even if he is offended at the delay it would be a much graver discourtesy to serve him someone else's leavings.
You have yet very much to learn.”
「多分そちはワシが日頃言っている倹約の精神に立って申しているのだろう」家康、「しかし、彼が遅れて不快になるよりも、残り物を出すことの方がもっと無礼である。もっと学べ。」と言いました。
