HIDEYOSHI'S GOLDEN TEA-ROOM

Hideyoshi directed his expedition against Korea from the temporary headquarters at Nagoya in Hizen, and here he lived in a very elegant and tasteful style that was a great contrast to the hard life and scanty fare of his soldiers in the field.

And rather surprising was his entertainment of his nobles in a golden Tea-room.

This he did in the fifth month of the first year of Bunroku (1592) inviting them in seven parties of six.

The Tea-room was of three mats, and the pillars were all gilt, as were the sills and lintels, while the walls were of folding gold plated boards six feet by five inches, set irregularly.

There were four Shoji by the verandah and the frames and solid parts of these were all of gold, and they were covered with silk gauze instead of paper.

The mats were scarlet and their edging was of gold brocade with a pattern in light green.

They were stuffed with the finest Echizen cotton wool.

The three feet verandah was of bamboo set in a frame of round wood with the bark removed.

On the verandah three round seats were placed and on these three of the guests sat while the other three went inside.

First Zoni was served and then tea was made.

In the Tokonoma was a flower arrangement in a turnip-headed arrow mounted on a thin piece of board.

The stand for the Tea utensils (Daisu), the Kettle and Furo, the Ladle-rest, the Water-jar and its cover, the Lid-rest, the Tea bowl, the Tea-spoon and the gourd-shaped Charcoal-box were all of gold.

The only articles that were not were the Tea-whisk and the towel.

This luxury was not exactly inconsistent with Hideyoshi's position seeing that the whole country was at his disposal, but it would have been out of proportion in anyone else.
