HIDEYOSHI ENTERTAINS AT OSAKA CASTLE

秀吉 大阪城でもてなす

 

 

Otomo Yoshishige Lord of Bungo took the name of Sambisai Sorin when he retired and became Nyudo.

大友義鎮、豊後臼杵城主は隠居後宗麟と名乗り入道となる。

 

 

He was gradually losing both territory and influence owing to the encroachments of his neighbor Shimazu Yoshihisa Lord of Satsuma, and wishing to obtain the help of Hodeyoshi in restoring these, on the fifth day of the fourth month of the fourteenth year of Tensho (1587) he came up to Osaka and sought an audience through the good offices of Matsui Yukan, bringing a hundred tiger-skins and many other valuable articles as a present.

彼は徐々に勢力範囲を弱め、隣国薩摩藩主の島津義久に侵略を許して行きます。そして、助けを秀吉に求め天正十四(1587)年四月五日大阪へ上洛、豊臣家人松井友閑を介し接見を申し込みます。その時、百枚の虎皮と多くの高価な工芸品を献上しました。

臼杵城主がたどった運命をひもとくに、ポルトガル人との交流や隣国その他から Murdoch 氏の著書の内容を引用。

Though Murdoch's view that “In the art of making the best of both worlds old Otomo proved as incompetent as Omura Sumitada was proficient,…King Francis may have found Heaven, but most of his earthly domains were lost and the house of Otomo all but ruined in the course of the quest,” may be not unjustified, yet he had a very merry and interesting life as well as a lengthy one, with Christianity and Teaism and War and politics.

彼はその中で、「素晴らしい国を造る中で、大友は大村純忠の様な人物では無かった。フランシス大友と言う一国の王は、天国を見つけたが領地は無くした、家も道を求めた為に没落する事になる。」と言っています。これはけして別々の事例ではありません。彼は生涯にキリストと共にあり、茶の湯あり、戦争あり、思慮深く、元気は有ったし人生を楽しんでいました。

He sent an ambassador and a letter to the Pope in which he observes, “as we are usually at war and are now aged and weary we cannot ourselves have the honor of coming to the Holy City to behold your countenance or kiss your feet and receive on our breast the sign of the cross from your august hand.”

大友国王はローマ法王秀吉へ手紙を携え使者を送ります、「我々は戦争の中に有り、崖の淵へ立ち疲弊して居ます。我々の力では天国から主をよび援助を請うことが出来ません、あなたの足にひれ伏し、威厳あるお力にただただ祈るばかりです。」

According to the Jesuits, says Tokutomi, Sorin was almost a saint, but according to his contemporaries he was a rather incompetent general with incomplete control of his passion.

クリスチャンに関し徳富は言っています。「宗麟は一人の聖人であるが、同時代、彼は一般的な為政者の能力は無かった。自身の感情をコントロールすることに欠けていた。」

 

 

 

At the hour of the Horse (12 noon) Hideyoshi received him in audience in the reception hall, sitting alone in front while on one side at a respectful distance sat his son Hidenaga, Ukita Hachiro Hideie, Hosokawa Hyobu-no-Taiyu Fujitaka, Hosokawaq Togoro Hidekatsu, Ukita Shichirohyoye Tadaie, and on the other Otomo Sorin in front and Maeda Chikuzen-no-Kami Toshiiie, Ankokuji Eikei, Matsui Yukan, and Sen-no-Rikyu a little behind him.

秀吉は正午ごろに広間での謁見を許し彼を迎え、同席は弟秀長、並んで宇喜田秀家、細川藤孝、細川秀勝、宇喜田忠家、大友宗麟が着座し、向かい側に前田利家、安国寺恵瓊、松井友閑そして千利休がその後ろに控えていました。

 

First a dinner of Seven, Five and Three, the auspicious number of dishes, was served.

始めに七種類の食材から五種類、三種類と吉兆の数の料理が振舞われました。

 

This ended Sorin put forward his petition as follows : “My family the house of Otomo have since the time of Yoritomo by whom it was conferred on them, held the office of Tandai of Kyushu and have ruled the six province of Buzen, Bungo, Chikuzen, Chikugo, Hizen and Higo. Hyuga, Satsuma and Ozumi also should be under my suzerainty, but Shimazu Yoshihisa has taken these three provinces for himself, while Tsukushi, Ryozoji and Akizuki have each carved out territories for themselves from my land, and with the exception of Tachibana Nyudo Dosetsu and Takahashi Nyudo Shoun they have all united against us.

食事が終わると宗麟が進み出て請願を始めました。「我大友家は源頼朝公にお使えし、九州地方を管轄しておりました。豊前、豊後、筑前、筑後、肥前そして肥後の六国を治め、日向、薩摩そして大隈の宗主国でありました。しかし、近年島津義久がこの三国を配下に治め Tsukushi 、 Ryozoji 、 Akizuki を我が国から略奪をしました。立花道拙や高橋翔雲が我々に反旗を翻し義久と同盟しました。

 

So Shimazu has become very strong and thinks that if he can subdue the whole of Kyushu he will be able to come up against Kyoto and attempt a decisive battle against you for the sway of the whole Empire ; but I wish your Lordship to attack him first, in which operation I shall be pleased to render all assistance in my power.”

島津は強大となり九州全域を支配しようとしています。そうなれば京都をも脅かす存在となり、貴方をも倒そうとするに違いなく脅威です。太閤殿下のお力で彼を倒して下さるのならは、我々は全力でお使えいたす所存です。」

 

“To those who submit to us we give fiefs,” replied Hideyoshi, much pleased, “and those who oppose us we conquer one after the other.

「我らに屈服すれば領地を差し出す、、」っと秀吉が笑みを浮かべながら、「我々に逆らえば、その時は征服じゃ。

 

The houses of Otomo and Mori were for a long time engaged in unseemly strife, it is true, but now we are glad to see that their friendly relations are assured.

大友と森の馬達は長い争い事に関わっているのう。しかし今、素晴らしい出会いによって友好関係が築かれた事は確かじゃ。

 

Since Shimazu does not obey our commands it naturally follows that we send our armies against him, and as Mori is the nearest we shall cause him to cross over and attack him without delay.”

島津は我々への忠誠の態度が無ので軍を向けよう、同様に森に対しても事を遅らせることなく派兵する。」

 

 

 

+This was the preliminary to the famous campaign of Hideyoshi against Satsuma, the only occasion on which Shimazu's province was conquered.

この事は秀吉の薩摩に対する有名な予備行動の出来事で、島津征伐の機会でありました。

 

 

 

The practical business being thus disposed of, Hideyoshi conducted Sorin to the Golden Chamber.

この実利に即した話し合いは整い、秀吉は宗麟を黄金の空間へ招きました。

 

This was a room of which the walls and ceiling and everything else were all of gold, the frames of the Shoji or sliding door being of gold and the doors themselves covered with scarlet silk.

そこは部屋全体が金で、緋色の絹の障子、戸も、全部金でした。

 

The shelves for the tea-utensils had their four supporting pillars of pear-skin gold lacquer and all the metal mounts were of solid gold.

茶道具を飾る台子は柱までもの金箔で覆われ、お茶を点てる道具一式の皆具は純金です。

 

The Kettle and its supporting Brazier, the Incense burner, the Water jar, the Lid-rest, the Dipper-rest, the Slop basin, Tea-Caddy, two Tea-bowls, Tray, Tea-spoon and gourd shaped Charcoal-container were all of gold.

釜と炉(風炉)、香炉、水指、蓋置、柄杓建、建水、茶入、茶碗二碗、盆、茶杓そして瓢箪型の炭籠、全部金です。

 

Only the Charcoal-tongs were of silver, and the hot water Dipper of bamboo.

ただ、火箸は銀製で柄杓は竹製です。

 

The Tea-whisk also was of purple bamboo.

茶筅はさすがに竹製。

 

Sorin was naturally amazed.

宗麟はもちろん驚きます。

 

“I think you are fond of Cha-no-yu, are't you?” enquired Hideyoshi. “Yes, he is quite an adept,” replied Rikyu for him.

「茶の湯を見たか?」と秀吉が尋ね、「彼は達人でございます。」っと利休が宗麟をかばいました。

 

“Then we will give him a cup,” said the Taiko. And Rikyu made tea and served it to Sorin, while Hideyoshi also invited a number of Sorin's retainers to join them.

「茶を進ぜよう」と太閤が言い、利休が宗麟へ茶を一服点てました。そして、秀吉は宗麟に伴っている家来も中に招き入れました。

 

He then showed them the keep of the castle and gave them tea again in a reception room in it.

城の設えを見せ、応接間である部屋でまた茶を接待しました。

 

He also showed them his sleeping chamber.

秀吉は彼らに寝室も見せました。

 

In it was a raised sleeping-dais about a foot and a half high, seven feet long by four wide, with drapery of scarlet and a pillow of solid gold ornamented with carved work.

そこはベットの様になっていて、50センチぐらいの高さがあります。長さ2メートルぐらいで幅は1メートル30センチぐらい。紫のドラペリーと曲線を使った金の模様がある枕が一つ置いてありました。

 

Next to this were six more sleeping-chambers and in two of them were the jars for keeping the leaf tea, each in a bag of brocade.

 

その奥には六つの寝室の空間があり、二カ所にはお茶のポットが置かれ、錦織の袋がそれぞれ置かれています。

 

“Show them my finest jars” ordered Hideyoshi, whereupon Rikyu, Tsuda Sokyu, Imai Sokun and Sen Doan brought out the four tea jars named Shokwa, Sayo-hime, Nadeshiko and Momoshima, and showed them to Sorin.

「ポットをここへ」と秀吉が命づると、利休と津田宗久、今井宗閑と千道安それぞれがお茶のポットを運んで来ました。名はShokwa、Sayo−hime、NadeshikoそしてMomoshimaです。

 

He also exhibited the inner apartments and again had tea served to them in an ante-room and presented Sorin with a short sword of rear make.

秀吉は建物の中を再び案内し、次の間でも彼らに茶を振る舞い、そして、宗麟に骨董の珍しい短剣をプレゼントしました。

 

All the courtiers of Hideyoshi remarked that they never remembered to have seen their Lord in such a gracious mood.

家臣の全てが、この上なくご機嫌な太閤を見て、以後その姿を忘れる事はありませんでした。

 

After this the visitors were entertained to a feast in Hidenaga's mansion, and when they were preparing to take leave Hidenaga took Sorin by the hand and said : “The best thing to do is to leave the most private affairs to Soeki, while I will see to the more public ones. That way you will not go wrong.”

訪れた一同は城での歓待を受け帰国の当日、秀長が見送り、宗麟が彼の手を取り言いました。「宗慶殿の個人的な茶を拝見出来なかったことは残念でしたが、いつか拝見できる事を楽しみにしています。」

Soeki was, of course, Rikyu.

宗慶とはもちろん利休のことでした。
