ASANO NAGAMASA
浅野長政
Asano Sakyo-no-taiyu Yukinaga had a detached Tea-room next to his reception room which he afterwards pulled down : his retainer Asano Naizen then got the timbers of it and built another room with them, and when it was finished he and Hori Mimasaka-no-kami Chikayoshi invited Yukinaga's father Danji-no-Shohitsu Nagamasa to a Cha-no-yu to celebrate the occasion.
浅野左京ノ太夫行長は茶室をやめて応接間を作る事にして改装しました。彼の家来である浅野内膳はその茶室の木材を譲り受け移築、完成すると、堀美正守親義と共に行長の父である壇上ノ匠筆長政を落成記念の茶の湯へ招待しました。
When Nagamasa arrived Naizen went out to meet him and ushered him into this new room which was called “Kusari-no-ma,” or “Chain Room,” and the guest, looking round at the room and its furnishings, noticed that everything showed signs of extravagant expenditure.
長政が到着すると内膳が出迎え改築した茶室「鎖の間」へ案内をしました。長政が一通り見学すると、それは浪費贅沢三昧でした。
“Look here, Naizen,” he said some what severely, “this room id quite out of proportion to an income of fifteen hundred koku.
「よいか内膳」きつく「千五百石取りには不似合いである。
Ostentation is very offensive to me, and an entertainment in these surroundings will not give me any pleasure.
If you whish to show me real hospitality you will serve it in your ordinary room.”
見栄を張るのは見苦しい、この設えではワシは一つも喜ばない。もし、もてなすならば身分相応の部屋にしなければならない。」と叱り付けました。
“I shall be most pleased to do whatever you whish,” replied Naizen, distinctly abashed.
「喜んでいただけるように一心で、、」と内膳は狼狽えます。
“Well, in that case,” returned Nagamasa, “you will pull this room down immediately.”
「さすれば」長政は言い、「すぐこの茶室を壊しなさい。」
And calling his retainers and those of Chikayoshi, he told them to go into the Roji and take it down.
内膳は家来達を呼び、その一人親義と言う者にすぐ露地へ行き壊すように命令しました。
So they tucked up their hakamas and soon had it dismantled, whereupon he proceeded into the older reception room and was there served with tea much to his satisfaction, after which he departed in a very good humor and much pleased with everything.
彼らは袴をたくし上げ取り壊し始め、元の応接間へ戻しました。茶の湯を長政へ接待し、彼は満足しました。その後、内膳はもてなしの出来る人間へと成長しました。
When this was reported afterwards to Ieyasu and Hidetada, they both expressed their approval of what Nagamasa had done.
この出来事が家康と秀忠に伝わり長政の行動を褒めました。
“These young men,” said the Sogun, “are apt to be extravagant, and that is just the kind of sharp lesson they need.”
「若い人間という者は」と将軍、「とかく虚勢を張りたがる、きつく戒めるのも大切である。」
