ABE TADAAKI AND THE TEA JAR
阿部忠秋と茶壷
Abe Bungo-n-kami Tadaaki wished to have a wooden box made for a tea jar that he prized very highly, and send the jar to a carpenter so that it might be fitted.
阿部豊後守忠秋はある時上様から褒美で賜った茶壷の木箱を作ろうと思い、一人の職人にその壺を預けました。
The craftsman set down the jar in his workshop and went on making the box without paying any special attention to it, when his child came in and picked it up and put it over his head for a joke.
その職人は茶壺を預かり帰宅、仕事場にそれを置き仕事を開始しましたが別段注意を払う事はありません。
そこへ彼の子供がやってきて面白半分でその壺を頭に被って遊んでいました。
But when he had got his head into it, it would not come off, and he soon started to howl with fright.
すると突然壺がすっぽりとはまってしまい頭から抜けなくなってしまい、恐怖のおたけびをあげだしたのです。
This drew his father's attention, and in great surprise he tried to pull the jar away, but it would not move, and the more he struggled with it the tighter it became, till the child was nearly suffocated.
その声を聞き父はびっくり、急いで壺を頭からとろうとしましたがびくともせず、もがけばもがくほどはまってしまったのです。ついに子供は窒息寸前まで追い込まれてしまいました。
The father then desisted and stood resigned with folded hands, only remarking; “What a pity! But what can be done since the jar is such a valuable one?”
父は壺から手を離し立ち尽くして叫びました、「かわいそうに！だからと言ってこの宝物の壺は壊すわけにはいかないんだよ！」
However, a retainer hurried to his load and told him.
とにかく、一人の家臣が殿さまのところへ急ぎ報告しました。
“How foolish!” exclaimed Abe, “why don't you break it at once?”
阿部は「なんとバカげたことか」と叫び「壺を早く割って助けろ！」と言いました。
So the retainer ran back and broke the jar and set the child free.
家来は取って返し壺を割って子供は助かりました。
